It was an important model for Jeep and Chrysler, developed as a response to the dominance of the Ford Explorer, which was the leading player on the SUV market in the early 1990s. Following in the tire tracks of its smaller corporate brother, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was built on a unibody chassis, unlike some other SUVs (including the Explorer) that featured a body-on-frame construction.
