In 1999 Mitsubishi Motors and Hyundai Motors introduced a full-size sedan that was designed by Mitsubishi Motors and jointly produced by both companies. In the Middle East, this sedan came under the Hyundai Centennial name, while in the Korean and Japanese markets it was called the Mitsubishi Proudia (limousine version) and Dignity (sedan version). A full-size luxury car became the company's flagship model, and was known worldwide as the Hyundai Equus, named after the 'Equus,' a word that signified 'horse' in the Latin language. The Hyundai Equus is reputed to be the largest and at the same time the most expensive sedan in the lineup of Hyundai Motors Company.
The fist generation models came as front wheel drive vehicles. The engines types included the 3.5L Sigma V6, the 4.5L Omega V8, and the 3.0 Sigma V6 engines. There were two versions: sedan (with the option of 3.0L, 3.5L or 4.5L engine) and limousine (3.5L or 4.5L engine). The limousine model with a long-wheelbase was offered exclusively for the domestic market. In 2003, the Hyundai Equus parts and accessories received redesign, with the revamped hood and new interior, xenon headlamps, and front packing sensors. In 2005 the Sigma V6 engines were replaced with 3.3L and 3.8L Lambda V6 engines, the previous 5-speed automatic transmission remained. Production of the first generation was discontinued in November 2008.
Hyundai Motors introduced a new and bigger Equus under the codename 'VI' in the year 2009. Unlike the previous Equus, the VI featured an all-new parts, e.g. new platform, rear-wheel drive architecture, and a longer wheelbase. The new and completely different model VI shared with the old Equus only the name, as it was of high reputation not only in Korea but worldwide as well. In North America, the Equus made its debut at the 2010 International Auto Show. The new sedan was powered by 4.6-liter Tau V8 engine producing 385 hp. This engine won Ward's 10 Best Engines award in both 2009 and 2010. Not a single rival, like Lexus or Mercedes, powered by 8-cylinder engine can claim that. The entirely aluminum engine block, VI system, dual continuous variable valve timing, and the timing chain drive system help to make Hyundai Equus the most powerful and fuel-efficient vehicle in its class.
The Hyundai Equus limousine was unveiled in 2009. Compared with the sedan, this version is 11.8-inch longer and offers more comfort to the VIP-class passengers, including massage system, power-driven footrest, and rear-seat leg support, all included into the list of standard Hyundai Equus parts and accessories. The limousine models feature exclusive radiator grille with horizontal cross-bar. The power comes from the Tau 5.0-liter V8 engine. An enlarged 5.5-liter version of the 8-cylinder engine was available in the bulletproof presidential limousine, the vehicle that was built of a special alloy and provided with bulletproof windows, as well as an automatic cooling system in case of fire.
