A leaf spring suspension isn’t as advanced as modern-day setups. Its usage spans centuries and its history traces back to the times of horse-drawn carriages. However, because leaf springs are so simple, reliable, and inexpensive to produce, they are in use even today, in the age of combustion-driven and hybrid transportation. It’s the exact sort of spring underpinning the rear of your Hummer H3. Plain and tough, leaf springs nonetheless have certain weaknesses. The ride they provide is quite harsh and their mounts (and bushings) are not very durable, especially if you’re used to exploring the performance limits of your bold Hummer.
Traditionally, these components degrade in a slow, gradual manner. Abrupt failure is possible in two cases – if you load your vehicle to the limit (for example, by carrying 3,000-lb cargo in the back) or if you ignore signs of wear. The suspension can be inspected visually on a lift, and worn-out suspension parts can also produce knocking noises over bumps.
