The Hummer H2 SUT accompanies the regular H2 in the lineup as a truck-based version of the vehicle. Rather than a traditional closed cabin, the SUT (Sport Utility Truck) features a truck bed design to go along with the rugged SUV-type design the H2 is known for. In size, the H2 SUT is not much smaller than the original Hummer. The H2 SUT boasts less curb weight but is longer and taller. The model can also fit six people comfortably. AM General assembled the H2 SUT out of Mishawaka, Indiana but GM owned the Hummer brand. The H2 SUT shares the same GMT820 platform as the Tahoe and the Yukon, which is for full-size trucks. While the H2 SUT, Tahoe, and Yukon share a lot of the same parts, it is the H2 SUT that is assembled in a different manner than the rest. The frame of the H2 SUT is comprised of three sections, with the front being shared from a modified GM 2500-Series utility frame. The middle is boxed while the rear employs a GM 1500-Series frame which is reinforced due to the vehicle's size and weight.
The first series of the H2 SUT included a 6.0L V8 capable of over 300 horsepower and approximately 315 pounds per foot of torque. Along with the 6.0L V8 for the first generation, the model was also offered with an automatic four-speed transmission and four-wheel drive. Pretty quickly, the H2 SUT made an impression on the American car buying public, especially for those who were skeptical due to the size of the original H1. Through marketing, the H2 SUT was depicted as a more economical and family-friendly SUV than the H1. In its debut year, the H2 SUT was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award, which assisted the model in gaining more mainstream acceptance as the successor to the Hummer name. Throughout its first couple of years on the road, the H2 SUT parts and accessories received only minor changes, such as in 2005 when a DVD navigation system became optional.
2008 saw GM institute more changes to the H2 SUT parts. The 6.0L V8 was upgraded to a 6.2L engine with the ability to pump out 393 horsepower. The transmission was also altered, as the first generation's 4-speed was replaced with a 6-speed automatic. The overall height was raised to 79.2 inches from 77.8. Its wide build and height are still considered to be bit of a liability on narrow roads or in urban areas even though it is still a popular vehicle among a younger, more contemporary demographic. Sales have been respectable despite the recent economic downturn. Since 2002, GM has sold on average 21,600 H2 units per year, an impressive figure, as it takes into consideration 2008 in which only 6,095 H2 models were sold. As a luxury SUV, the H2 SUT has found its place. Both a symbol for the rugged ability to traverse through all types of terrain along with a bold look that still gets attention, the Hummer H2 SUT is firmly established as a vehicle that has made its presence felt on more roads than one.
As soon as Hummer made its presence known to the buying public, there was a certain image that came along with the vehicle. Powerful and intimidating, it ushered in its own essence of style and size that many were instantly attracted to. The H2 SUT picked up the Hummer torch and is a popular answer for those who want the same look and confidence of the original without the extra boxy space. The H2 SUT has the same intrinsic ability to stomp through harsh conditions with the performance to back it up. Always a crowd pleaser, the H2 SUT has established itself as definitive leader for this generation.
