The Honda Element followed a concept vehicle called the Model X which debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The vehicle came to the U.S. and Canadian dealerships in 2003. The Element was positioned as an affordable SUV with a superb look. It was focused primarily on young people and opened a brand-new market niche of "cubic", compact SUVs, which was later enlarged with the Nissan Cube, the Kia Soul, the Ford Flex, and others. From the very beginning, the Element caught the customers' fancy and was in strong demand in the USA. However, after the launch of more technologically advanced and affordable rivals, the Element started to loose its popularity. The vehicle was discontinued in 2011.
