A fuel tank is much more than a glorified gas can bolted to the underside of the vehicle. In addition to being a reservoir for fuel, the tank on most modern vehicles houses the electric fuel pump and fuel gauge sender. Baffles inside the tank prevent fuel from sloshing away from the pump pickup and minimize noise, and the tank is a key component in the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP), which prevents fuel vapors from escaping to the atmosphere.
Fuel tanks are manufactured from metal or plastic. Metal tanks start out as sheets of steel or aluminum that are then stamped and welded together. Plastic tanks are formed from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that is blow molded into shape. Regardless of construction, all fuel tanks and filler necks exist in the harsh undercar environment, where they are subject to rain, snow, ice, dirt, road salt, and debris. Corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of metal tanks, to the point of perforation and fuel leaks. Temperature extremes and vibration can cause plastic tanks to crack and leak, and both types can suffer impact damage. In addition to external corrosion, steel tanks can also rust inside.
Our replacement fuel tanks and fuel filler necks are made to OE specifications for a perfect fit, and they’re coated to resist corrosion and provide long lasting durability. Each tank is factory leak tested and comes with a new locking ring and seal where applicable. We even offer fuel tank assemblies that come complete with a new fuel pump. Metal tank straps experience the same degree of corrosion, and to ensure a safe, secure mounting we recommend they be replaced along with the tank. We also offer standard and locking fuel caps, gaskets, rollover valves, and filler neck sleeves – everything needed for fuel system repair.
The most dangerous racing crashes are ones that involve fire, and in the early days of racing fiery crashes were all too common. Years ago cars that were little more than modified production models were raced on road courses, dirt tracks, and drag strips, and in an accident their steel tanks could easily rupture and spill gasoline, often with unfortunate consequences. Thankfully, today many forms of racing require fuel to be contained in fuel cells, which are designed to resist puncturing and spilling gas when impacted. While fuel cell construction varies according to brand, the most common type holds the fuel in a flexible bladder, which can be made of reinforced rubber, or specialized coated fabric, depending on model and manufacturer. You will find the finest of them in our store.
But if your idea of performance has nothing to do with the race track, but rather the ability to cover a lot of miles without stopping, we’ve got you covered. We offer high capacity fuel tanks made from military-grade polymer that can extend your driving range by as much as 500 miles. These tanks are available for most popular Jeeps and trucks, and come in designs that replace mid-ship or after axle mounted factory tanks, as supplemental bed-mounted auxiliary and transfer tanks, and even tanks that install in place of the spare tire. The polymer construction allows our tanks to be configured for space in ways not possible with a steel tank, and unlike steel they won’t corrode, delaminate or crack at the welds.
