In 1986, the Ford Motor Company in alliance with Mazda created the efficient and economical subcompact Ford Festiva that was based on Mazda's 121 platform. The car was built by Kia Motors of South Korea and introduced on the North American market only in 1988. The first-generation Festiva was introduced as a three-door hatchback powered by a 1.3 L I4 engine producing 58 hp. In 1993, due to the close partnership with Kia Motors, the second generation of the Ford Festiva was launched and marketed as the Ford Aspire in the USA. The redesigned Festiva enhanced its 1.3 L I4 engine to 63 hp and obtained a new streamlined exterior design. The third-generation Festiva was a 5-door model based on the Mazda Demio and was known as the Ford Festiva Mini Wagon. Its I4 engine had a displacement of 1.3 L or 1.5 L.
