For over 30 years in a row, Ford has been building more commercial vehicles a year than any other manufacturer. The Dearborn-based company is also the only one to offer a full range of CVs from class-one up to class-seven. In 2018, Ford started refreshing its entire portfolio of commercial vehicles, giving fleet customers even more technologies and improved powertrains. Already in 2019, the automaker introduced a new member of the F-Series Super Duty lineup at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. It is the Ford F-600, which is intended to bridge the gap between the F-550 and F-650 medium-duty trucks.
Ford's latest addition to the Super Duty range is designed for those who need extra payload in a smaller, more manageable package. While being of the same size and body style as a Class 5 truck, it offers the capability of a Class 6 Super Duty. Thus, customers who want to install heftier upfits don't need to opt for a bigger vehicle. With the F-600, they get higher power and a GVWR of 22,000 pounds in a more maneuverable truck. To increase GVWR, some of the Ford F-600 parts of the driveline and chassis have been beefed up. The new chassis cab also sits on 19.5-inch wheels and tires rated for higher loads. 4x2 and 4x4 models are available. At launch, the F-600 is set to share the gasoline and diesel engine lineup with the rest of Ford's Super Duty trucks. First off all, it is the all-new 7.3-liter gas-fed V8 that joined the range in 2019. It superseded the old 6.8-liter V10, and thanks to fewer cylinders and a simpler construction with fewer components, it is claimed to offer reduced downtime and ownership cost savings in the long run. Another gasoline-powered engine option is a 6.2-liter V8, while diesel power comes from a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8. Engine output is managed by a 6-speed automatic or Ford's heavy-duty 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission.
