The origin of the Ford Super Duty F-450 goes back to 1949, just when the F-Series was launched. Manufactured between 1949 and 1952, the F-450 was the re-badged F-4, a large commercial pickup truck. It was equipped with an I6 engine. In 1987, the F-450 reappeared on the market. It had dual fuel tanks, so that they could interchange each other when one of them went dry. In 1987-1997, the F-450 used either a gasoline 7.5 L V8 or diesel 7.3 L V8. There was only one engine available on the 2009 F-450: a turbocharged diesel 6.4 L V8 Power Stroke attached to a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. In 2012, the model gained dual rear wheels. It was offered in four trim levels: the base XL, XLT, Lariat, and King Ranch. All of them were powered by two engines: either a gasoline 6.2 L 385-hp V8 or a turbo diesel 6.7 L 400-hp Power Stroke V8.
