The roots of a subcompact crossover, the Ford EcoSport, trace back to the early 2000s. The production of the original EcoSport commenced in 2003 at Ford’s Brazilian plant in Camaçari. Based on the European Ford Fusion and fifth-gen Fiesta, the EcoSport was developed as a simple yet capable tiny vehicle offered at an affordable price. Having groped the customer base in South America, the EcoSport took a step forward while entering Asian and African markets with the introduction of its second generation in 2012. This miniature but quite an agonistic vehicle even appeared in Ford dealerships in Europe. With no success, but still.
In 2016, Ford announced that the EcoSport would be launched in the United States and Canada for the 2018 model year. However, this new American EcoSport won’t be that new, in fact. Even though the U.S.-market version will offer a bunch of exclusive options and its own set of powertrain variations, it’s just a mid-cycle update, so most parts used will be completely identical to the ones utilized in an EcoSport built for other markets.
The North-American EcoSport, though, is available with distinctive head- and taillights and redesigned front and rear fascias. Inside the cockpit, this compact off-roader offers a new dashboard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system setting up Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In the United States, this model generally targets a younger generation of drivers, and thus Ford promised to boost its gadget-friendliness by installing two USB ports and two 12-volt outlets. Plus, there will be an optional 110-volt plug for rear passengers. The engine choice includes the Fiesta’s 1.0L turbocharged I3 and a naturally aspirated 2.0L I4, both running on gasoline, both mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, both emphasizing the prefix Eco rather than the word Sport.
This fun and capable SUV was built to be durable, but even such an innovative and modern vehicle is not immune from occasional problems.
