It was equipped with either a diesel or a gasoline engine mated to a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. The next release was presented to the world in 1999 – a two-door convertible body style left the family and a CVT gearbox was replaced with semi-automatic options. The third generation entered the market in 2005. The list of body styles experienced no changes in comparison with the previous version of the Punto, but CNG and flexible-fuel engines were added to the family. The manufacture of the third generation is still in progress.
