Unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the Ferrari 599 is a grand tourer that came as a successor to the Ferrari 575 M Maranello. Styled by Pininfarina under the supervision of Frank Stephenson, Director of Design at Ferrari, the 599 is a 2-seat berlinetta (sporty form of coupe) featuring a front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Some of the exterior accessories and parts of the Ferrari 599 are similar to those of the already discontinued 612 Scaglietti. The GT has a wheelbase of 108.3'', it is 183.7'' long, 77.2'' wide, and 52.6'' high. It is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine that produces 612 hp and 448 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, while a single-clutch six-speed automated manual transmission, also known as F1 SuperFast, is offered in the list of optional Ferrari 599 parts. The car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reaches the top speed of 205 mph.
The Ferrari 599 is offered in two trim levels: the basic GTB Fiorano and the higher-performance GTO. The GTO abbreviation stands for 'Gran Turismo Omologato' or 'grand touring homologated,' while the GTB stands for 'Gran Turismo Berlinetta' and the 'Fiorano' part is added to tribute Ferrari's test track in Fiorano Modenese, Italy. Ferrari says the GTB Fiorano sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and the GTO hits 60 mph in around 3.4 seconds. The list of standard parts and equipment on the GTB includes 19'' front and 20'' rear wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, an adaptive suspension system, xenon headlights, automatic dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery and interior trim, a navigation system and an eight-speaker Becker sound system with a CD player. The Ferrari GTO comes with enhanced suspension and steering, a different transmission calibration, 20'' wheel all around, manually adjustable carbon-fiber racing seats, and carbon-fiber racing wheel with integrated LED shift lights. The list options on both the 599 GTO and the 599 GTB Fiorano includes various wheel designs, front and rear parking sensors, fully powered Recari sports seats, a premium audio system, an iPod interface and a six-CD changer. Future owners can create a vehicle of their own by choosing from numerous customization options, such as exterior paint and interior leather colors, extended interior leather trim, and two carbon-fiber interior trim packages.
Ferrari also offered several option packages and limited edition versions of the 599. An optional HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) sport package is full of revised Ferrari 599 parts, such as a modified setup with stiffer springs and rear anti-roll bar, revised damper calibration, quicker shifts from the single-clutch automated manual transmission, and a throatier exhaust tone. The list of one-off versions of the Ferrari 599 includes the P540 Superfast Aperta and the Superamerica 45. The P540 Superfast Aperta was commissioned by Edward Walson in 2008, and it was the second car in the Ferrari's Special Project program. The Superceramica 45 was designed for a long-time Ferrari aficionado Peter Kalikow to commemorate his 45th year as a Ferrari client. At the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Ferrari announced a convertible version, the SA Aperta, of the 599 that was to honor designers Sergio Pininfarina and Andrea Pininfarina. The company manufactured only 80 examples of the convertible. At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari announced replacement for the 599. It is the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which is planned to retain the FR layout, 2-seat configuration, and the V12 engine.
