Like many body accessories, rear spoilers are based on modifications made by car builders to production vehicles to make them more aerodynamic for racing. Spoilers are typically added to provide increased downforce for traction, but a spoiler’s size, shape, and angle depends greatly on the design of the vehicle on which it’s being mounted, the speeds and type of racing the car is being prepared for, and the performance goals of the constructor.
While factory installed and aftermarket spoilers are based on racing spoilers they are seldom identical – the same degree of functionality is unnecessary on a car driven at highway speeds, and the aesthetic effect, the way the spoiler makes the car look, is much more important. In addition, road going spoilers often have to accommodate features like a trunk that opens easily and 3rd brake lights, which may be unnecessary on track driven cars.
As the name suggests, aftermarket factory style spoilers are designed to resemble spoilers mounted as original equipment on production vehicles. The automaker might install a rear spoiler as a standalone addition or with just a few other mods to distinguish a “Sport” model from the plain Jane version, or the spoiler could be a part of a full-on aero package on a high-performance model that includes an air dam, side skirts, and may be a special hood. With aftermarket factory style spoilers the key word is “style”, because in some cases an aftermarket spoiler may not be an exact replica of the OEM spoiler.
Although selection will vary according to brand and vehicle application, in general factory style spoilers are available in a wide range of shapes and styles including lip spoilers, flush mount spoilers, roofline spoilers, pedestal mounted wings, and even spoilers with integrated 3rd brake lights. A factory style spoiler may be a good choice if you want your plain Jane to look like the Sport model, or it can also be the perfect accompaniment to a custom full body kit, in the creation of your own aerodynamic high-performance machine.
