A thermostat is a cooling system part designed to control the flow of coolant going through the radiator. The motor was designed to operate at the temperature of 190 °F approximately, and with a functional thermostat, the engine reaches its proper temperature much quicker and operates more efficiently. When the engine is hot enough, a thermostat opens, and coolant can flow transferring excess heat away and preventing overheating. A thermostat housing is designed to hold a thermostat in place while keeping a radiator hose connected and allowing for the circulation of cooling fluid.
Some Daewoo Lanos owners reported that their thermostat housings were broken within a short period of time. The source of this problem can be in the inferior material of the original parts (plastic). Continual engine vibrations and, probably, the mechanical stress created by a short and tight hose lead to cracks in the housing and leaks. In this situation, replacing the hose for the longer and more flexible one may help, but the thermostat housing should also feature the necessary strength and operating characteristics.
