The right vehicle can make even the longest journey comfortable. Of course, there are downsides and one of those is constantly trying to remember the speed limit, and then having to adjust and re-adjust how much you are accelerating to ensure you stay within that speed limit. Or, there is cruise control, which makes those long trips even more relaxing because it takes one problem away from you, so you can focus on what is happening around you.
Cruise control may seem as though it is just a fun gadget, but it can be a lot more than that for a lot of purposes. Those long journeys can be tiring on their own, but even more so when you are constantly having to ensure the vehicle is not speeding. With cruise control, you set the system to the speed you want, and then you can take your eye off the dashboard and watch the road in the knowledge that cruise control will keep you at that speed.
Cruise control has not changed a lot since it was first fitted to vehicles, but it has become better able at keeping the right speed. It works by pulling a cable, connected to an actuator, which allows the engine to take more or less fuel depending on whether the system wants to slow the vehicle or speed up. To decide what to do, it uses a computer, which relies on the information passed on by a number of different sensors. They provide information about the current speed of the vehicle, whether you are using the brake or clutch, and whether you are steering.
With so many components involved in a cruise control system, there are a few problems waiting to go wrong. The cable can become stretched or the actuator can fail, which will cause problems with the cruise control system not being able to perfectly adjust the speed. The sensors can fail to provide the right information to the computer, which causes it to make the wrong decisions, or the computer and wiring can themselves fail. Because you are dealing with a component that controls your vehicle, you want to make sure you are fixing problems immediately.
There are a few symptoms to show you of problems coming up, and you should pay attention to all of them whenever they come up. For instance, if the cruise control system is not able to keep the right speed when you are driving over flat ground, it could be a sign that the cable has stretched or the sensors are failing. If it goes over the speed you set, then it is likely to be a problem with the sensors, and if the cruise control system stops working at all, you can assume the computer has seen better days.
