The Chrysler Imperial debuted in 1926, and it was a strong competitor to the most popular luxury automobiles of the time – cars by Cadillac and Lincoln. The year 1955 marked the transformation of the Imperial into a separate make, which represented luxury cars for people who needed an exclusive vehicle to show their class. Relatively low number of customers interested in this segment as well as much greater popularity of Lincolns and Cadillacs created a real challenge for the Imperial, and despite all its advantages, it simply could not keep up with the competition, which resulted in the model being suspended in 1983. However, the Chrysler Imperial made a triumphant return in 1990 and stayed on the market for three more years. In 2006, a new concept car with the Imperial nameplate has been revealed at the North American International Auto Show.
