The Chevy Silverado is a quintessential American pickup truck. Its glorious history traces back to 1975, when the luxury trim edition named Silverado was added to the Chevrolet C/K. Based on this trim, the all-new Chevy Silverado truck appeared in 1998, intended to replace America's beloved C/K. It marked the birth of a completely new lineup of trucks, redesigned and reengineered to be more capable, ride faster, handle better, and offer more comfort. It didn't take too long for the newcomer to evolve into one of the best-selling trucks. The Silverado range includes light-duty and heavy-duty lineups, with the former identified as 1500 and 2500 and the latter encompassing 1500HD, 2500HD, and 3500HD models. A 4.8-liter small-block V8 was a popular choice for the first-generation Chevy Silverado 1500, yet an optional 5.3-liter V8 with its 270 hp and 315 pound-feet of twist made more pulling and passing power preferable for more serious hauling and towing, while offering a healthy dose of driving fun.
The second generation was introduced in 2006, underpinned with a new GMT900 platform. The truck's exterior was redesigned: the 2007 Silverado 1500 got taller and received a new horizontal grille, while featuring a reintegrated box and smaller gaps between the tires and fenders. The new fully-boxed frame and suspension design added much to the ride-and-handling department. New engine options were introduced as well. The smallest 4.3-liter 195-hp V6 and 4.8-liter 295-hp V8 offer enough power for light-duty jobs, but for those who demand greater towing and hauling capacity, there is a 5.3-liter V8 in regular and flex fuel variations, with both good for 315 hp, or a mighty 6.0-liter V8 offering 367 hp. There was a hybrid model that debuted in 2008 but was discontinued in a few years.
The highlights for the redesigned third generation launched for 2014 include a revised chassis and suspension, revamped interior that is considered to be the quietest in this class, and a new lineup of engines that use plenty of fuel-saving technologies. These include direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation, VVT, and all-aluminum construction. This time, the most powerful engine is a 6.2-liter V8 offered on 4WD models, making impressive 420 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque. Changes in styling were mild at launch, but in 2016, a mid-cycle refresh brought an entirely new front fascia.
2018 marks 100 years since Chevy introduced its first trucks to the public, and it is the year the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 entered its fourth generation, setting tone for the next century of full-size pickup trucks. While being larger and riding on a 3.9 inches longer wheelbase, it is roughly 450 pounds lighter than its predecessor thanks to an extensive use of aluminum and high-strength steel. In addition to gasoline-fed 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8 engines, the first-ever Duramax turbodiesel is in the offing. There is a new model lineup grouped into High Value, High Volume, and High Feature categories.
The Chevy Silverado 1500 has always offered a multitude of versions to help customers find the ideal vehicle for their needs.
