Invented long before the internal combustion engine, at the beginning, leaf springs were used for suspending horse-drawn carriages. With the arrival of motor vehicles, leaf springs migrated to their suspension systems. Gradually, though, because of their moderate (comparably to coil springs and torsion bars) characteristics, leaf springs started to leave the area of light personal transportation.
