The Chevy Camaro entered the rapidly growing pony car market in 1966. The competition started by the Ford Mustang made other manufacturers develop comparable cars. Chevrolet came up with the Camaro, based on a compact platform of the Nova. It originally offered three trim levels: the base Sport Coupe (which was less expensive than the Mustang), Rally Sport, and Super Sport. Seven different engine options were offered at its debut, from the base 3.8L inline-six all the way up to a 6.2L V8. The legendary race-ready Camaro Z/28 was introduced a bit later in 1966, powered by a small-block 4.9L V8 rated at 290 hp. In its first year of production, the Camaro paced the Indianapolis 500.
