First appearing in 1985, the Chevy Astro minivan and its sibling the GMC Safari were stronger and more truck-like than their front-wheel drive competition from Dodge/Plymouth. Since 1990, Chevrolet has equipped the Astro with ABS brakes—i.e., discs in the front and drums for the rear wheels. Later, driver’s airbags became standard in the Astro, in addition to the additional security of reinforcing beams. Between 2000 and 2004, the Astro received several improvements in seating capacity and a quieter engine. Chevrolet ceased producing the Astro in 2005.
