Like many other areas of an automobile, bumpers are multi-part assemblies rather than monolithic structures. While the degree of complexity will vary by vehicle and bumper design, in addition to the bumper or bumper cover, and moldings and trim pieces, a bumper assembly may include a bumper grille and other bumper inserts, light bezels, and bumper covers for tow hook and fog light openings. Along with being part of the bumper assembly the other thing that bumper inserts and covers have in common is that no matter what you drive you can find the ones you need right here on our digital shelves.
The bumper’s primary purpose is for protection, but it may also have openings to allow airflow to the radiator or other heat exchangers like oil coolers and power steering coolers, or even to supply cooling air to the brakes. A bumper will also typically have openings for bumper mounted lights including fog lights, parking lights, turn signals, and cornering lights. These cavities are typically trimmed to enhance styling and create visual interest. Airflow openings may have grille inserts and/or surrounds, and lights are usually enclosed in bezels, trim rings, or insert panels.
Covers to conceal components or hide empty openings are another common bumper feature. Most late-model cars have an anchor point behind the bumper cover to attach a tow eye hook, which is supplied with the car, in a tool kit or with the jack. The hook is intended for vehicle recovery but was also used to pull the car down the assembly line and often used to stabilize the vehicle during shipping. A cover is used to conceal the anchor point when the hook is not installed. It’s common practice for vehicle manufacturers to use the same bumper regardless of a model’s optional equipment. For example, if a car or truck is not equipped with fog lights, in their place decorative covers are installed over the openings in the bumper where they would be mounted.
When bumpers are impacted in collisions, the bumper inserts and covers typically incur damage. All parts of the bumper assembly must be inspected and the necessary components replaced to restore the vehicle to pre-accident condition. Inserts and covers are not typically supplied with a bumper or bumper cover, and must be purchased separately. But a crash isn’t the only reason for insert and cover replacement. Most of these components are plastic, which can fade and deteriorate from weathering and exposure to UV rays. Chrome bezels can become pitted, and of course any of these parts can become cracked or broken when impacted by road debris. Whether you’re making extensive repairs after an accident or minor refurbishing, we have the inserts and covers to restore your vehicle’s appearance.
