A distinctive coupe with a luxury feel and sporty acceleration, the Avanti II possesses quite a peculiar history, being one of bright representatives of the U.S. automotive industry of the 1960s. The model was a successor of the original Avanti produced by Studebaker, an American automaker headquartered in South Bend, Indiana. After the manufacturer left the U.S. market to take its chances in Canada in 1964, the model's future seemed to have only one scenario. However, thanks to the efforts of a Studebaker dealer Nate Altman and his partner Leo Newman, the Avanti started a new lease of life. They purchased a part of the abandoned Studebaker factory and founded the Avanti Motor Corporation, so in 1965, the brand-new Avanti II hit the market.

This fiberglass sports tourer was outstanding in performance, styling, and handling, greatly surpassing its predecessor. As the Avanti II was basically handmade, customers had a multitude of interior trim and fabric options to choose from. This feature was one of the model's winning cards that led to its enviable success. The molded fiber glass body was another great advantage as owners didn't have to worry about rust, corrosion, or other deterioration of body panels. Consequently, the service life of the car was extended and the weight was reduced providing better aerodynamics. The exterior gained a more streamlined look, while featuring the same grille-less nose, slim bumpers, "coke-bottle" profile, and sharp-edged front fenders.

The new Avanti received a lighter and more powerful Chevrolet engine, the Corvette 327-cid V8 cranking out 300 bhp. The motor was mated to a fully synchronized Borg-Warner 4-speed manual transmission or "power-shift" 3-speed automatic that permitted manual runs through first and second gears. This sporty coupe could reach a top speed of 125 mph, while being able to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 9 seconds. Front caliper disc brakes combined with rear fin drums delivered impressive stopping power. In general, the Avanti II was praised for a firm yet comfortable ride and a great number of safety features that included a rugged X-frame, racing-type steel roll bar, front end suspension, carefully contoured bucket seats, fully padded dash, and safety cone door locks. Overall, the Avanti II was a meticulously designed car, being perfect in every detail.
