Automotive lifts and stands are versatile devices used to lift a vehicle or its parts off the ground and support them in the air while the repair or maintenance job is performed. Automotive lifts and stands are used in every single commercial repair shop, while portable models are utilized by hobby mechanics for routine or emergency use. Automotive lifts and stands can provide access to the underbody of your car for you to do a variety of jobs with ease.

To get access to the underside of your automobile, you will first of all need to elevate it with the help of a car jack. The necessary safety measure when using a jack is supporting the automobile using jack stands. These strong towers or tripods can temporarily bear the weight of your automobile in case the jack fails. Jack stands differ in height and weight capacity. Panel stands, rotating parts stands, bumper holding stands are specialized frames that can hold vehicle parts in place while they are being worked on. So-called work stands and step stands feature extendible ladders or adjustable steps.

Car jack is not the only portable car lifting device. Another way to safely elevate the front or rear of your automobile is using portable hydraulic car lift or car ramps. Featuring rugged non-skid design with different degree incline, the pair of heavy duty ramps allows you to drive the wheels up the ramp thus lifting them off the ground and creating enough space to access the vehicle's underside. Car ramps differ in width to accommodate tires of various sizes and in weight capacity that may range from 1.5 up to 20 tons. Hydraulic lifts positioned under the car feature the scissor design to raise it upwards.

While many automotive lifts are used to raise your car above the ground, engine hoists are utilized for removing or installing the entire power unit. They typically feature a hydraulic cylinder attached to a steel frame with a hook hanging down from the top. Adjustable upper boom design allows for varying the hoist’s reach potential, while folding legs ensure convenient storage. Once removed from your automobile, the engine can be placed on a specialized engine stand that will hold it securely in place. Fuel tank handlers are used to remove, install, and move the fuel tank supporting it with adjustable foam pads.

Great Engine Stand
This is a great engine stand. I seriously doubt one could build this stand for what it costs. You would need to purchase the steel, hardware, casters, and paint in large volume amounts to come anywhere the cost for just the materials. Not to mention fabrication and painting time. I thought it was such a good bargain that I bought two.

Rolling Cradle
I used this for a Cadillac 472 engine and it works great. It makes it easy to move the engine when I need to. Takes up less room than an engine stand. Worked so well I bought a second one to store my other 472. I only wish it came with a storage bag to cover the engine. I had to buy that separately.
