The Audi E-Tron is the German automaker's first all-electric SUV that is set to challenge the likes of the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace. Inside and out, the new EV is unmistakably an Audi, bearing a distinct resemblance to corporate cousins including the Q5 and Q8. At launch, it is underpinned by the MLB platform shared with other members of Audi's lineup. An extended 115.1-inch wheelbase provides enough room for both the battery pack and interior, while giving the vehicle a sporty stance. The E-Tron retains the exterior design elements typical for fuel-powered vehicles, including the corporate octagonal grille and air intakes, which are there to help direct the airflow out through wheel arches for aerodynamic purposes.
Powering the E-Tron's wheels is an electronic Quattro all-wheel drive system. It uses one electric motor per axle, with the rear one producing most of the power in low energy demand conditions. Juice is supplied by a big 95 kWh battery pack located under the cabin floor. The battery features an innovative cooling system isolated in a special compartment below, with a proprietary gel-like material transferring excess heat from the cells to the coolant channels, preventing the acid and coolant from mixing. It is crucial for the battery to be cooled properly when SAE Combo DC fast chargers are used, which provide 80% of charge in half an hour. This happens thanks to a charging rate of 150 kW that the Audi E-Tron supports, which makes it the first electric vehicle on the market to be compatible with the rate this high. In the event of a crash, the pack is fully protected by an aluminum frame with crumple zone and an anti-puncture bottom tray. At launch, the U.S.-version was quoted to do a 0-60 mph run in 5.5 seconds, while reaching a max speed of 124 mph. Audi's EV comes with an air suspension and offers a notable towing power of 4,000 pounds.
Inside, there are premium materials, high-end finishes, and thoughtfully arranged Audi E-Tron accessories and parts, which together create Audi's special wrap around cockpit surrounding the driver and passengers with luxury and comfort. There are two touchscreen displays in the center, with a bigger 10-inch screen providing control over vehicle settings, phone, and navigation, and a lower 8.6-inch one used for A/C and heating operation. Two trim levels are available to choose from at launch, being Premium Plus and Prestige. As expected from a luxury SUV, the Premium Plus abounds in standard features, which include leather seats (those in front are also heated and cooled), panoramic sunroof, and a Bang & Olufsen audio, to name just a few Audi E-Tron parts and systems. The Prestige offers massaging front seats with a different leather upholstery, a head-up display, dual-pane acoustic side windows, and other Audi E-Tron accessories for extra comfort and convenience, along with advanced driver assist systems.
