On April 4, 2012, the Honda's luxury brand unveiled its Acura RLX Concept at the New York International Auto Show. The production RLX will hit the US showrooms in early 2013 to replace the aging Acura RL. The 2014 Acura RLX luxury sedan has a more athletic and compact look than its predecessor. The new vehicle is 2'' longer in the wheelbase, 2'' shorter in the overhangs, and 2'' wider than the RL. The concept features the brand's new design direction with the more elegant lines and shinier accessories that give the RLX a more expensive look versus the outgoing RL. The compact, at first glance, exterior conceals a spacious cabin with the optimized rear seat legroom and capacious trunk. The RLX also offers all modern tech conveniences including smartphone connectivity, a 14-speaker ultra premium audio system, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition, and dual LCD screens (7-inch touch screen and 8-inch display). The screens provide easy access to the key functions, such as climate control, voice-to-text SMS text messaging, audio and navigation. Another important convenience is the next-gen AcuraLink telematics system which enhances safety, security and vehicle performance. The system includes airbag deployment notification, remote door lock/unlock, build-in cellular communication, security alarm notification and stolen vehicle tracking.
The new flagship sedan will present an extensive array of standard passive and active safety features. The main active safety component is the innovative Acura’s Lane Keep Assist System, which prevents the car from drifting into other lanes and provides lane departure warnings. Collision Mitigation Braking System with the Forward Collision Warning and the 4-wheel ABS will be available, too. The Passive safety system consists of front, side and side-curtain airbags for both driver and front passenger, as well as of driver’s knee airbag. To enhance driver's night time visibility and make the RLX more attractive, the car is equipped with the “Jewel Eye” LED headlights. They consist of such parts as a dual-stack array of high-intensity LED nodes and ultra-reflective optical lenses. The luxury car sits on 20-inch ''propeller'' style wheels with 255/35/20 tires, which completes the ultra-sharp look of the Acura RLX.
The RLX Concept features Acura’s first application of their Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system. The car is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine and a dual electric motor, which distributes additional power between the rear and front wheels. The car produces 370 hp and 449 lb-ft of torque. The sedan comes standard with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, which is the only available option so far. The applied hybrid technology helps improve fuel economy: 30 mpg city/highway. Talking about the underhood parts, the car comes with the traditional for Acura single overhead cam (SOHN), variable valve timing and center limited-slip differential (LSD). The production RLX will be available in a front-wheel drive version with a 3.5-liter engine producing 310 horsepower. The vehicle will also show excellent performance through the application of the Acura's Precision All Wheel Steer system that works in pair with variable gear ratio (VGR) steering and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). The car is reported to weigh under 4,000 pounds.
The RLX's designers did all their best to form more than sheet metal. They created a vehicle that is an extension of the driver's instincts with a high level of connectivity, comfort and advanced performance. To meet buyers' demands, the RLX's creators has bent the technology to the driver's will. As a result, the car is a combination of amazing styling and smart packaging. Everybody can find something to fall in love with when it comes to this luxury sedan.
