A/C Condensers

The condenser is where your A/C system gets rid of the heat from the passenger compartment. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant in the evaporator and that which is developed by compression of refrigerant gas in the compressor is dissipated by the condenser, and the cooled refrigerant returns to a liquid state. The condenser works much like the radiator, and on most vehicles it is located right in front of that cooling system heat exchanger.

Condensers are made of aluminum and consist of a network of tubes for refrigerant flow, with fins to transfer the heat to the passing air. Due to their mounting location, condensers are subject to clogging and damage from debris. Severe impact could puncture a tube and cause a refrigerant leak, with subsequent total loss of A/C and possible damage to other system components from the loss of lubricant that flows through the system with the refrigerant. Debris and minor impacts can block or distort the fins and obstruct airflow, reducing heat transfer and A/C efficiency.

Condensers are also subject to internal clogging, especially if there has been a compressor failure, which would allow debris to enter the condenser and block the tubes. Excessive pressure on an A/C manifold gauge and insufficient cooling can indicate a clogged condenser. If you suspect your condenser as the cause of these systems, replace it. Flushing, while necessary any time there has been a failure in the system, may not remove all debris from the condenser.

Some may advocate cleaning and fin straightening when there is buildup and damage on the outside of the condenser, but condenser fins are easily damaged. Don’t waste your time to end up with a possible leak and poor A/C performance.
