The Toyota 86 has been around since 2013 as one of the most celebrated no-frills enthusiast's cars from Japan. Together with its near-twin, the Subaru BRZ, it is a rear-wheel-drive sports car that doubles as a decent daily driver. Its finely tuned suspension hits the sweet spot between handling and comfort, the chassis is predictable, while the steering is well-weighted and responsive. Even though the driving characteristics of the Toyota 86 are on par with some of the more expensive sports cars, the platform is getting long in the tooth. With the development of the second generation already known to be in progress, there are no changes to the current model for 2020 save for special edition versions.
The Hakone Edition is a styling pack named after the twisty road outside Tokyo. It is painted in distinctive metallic green and rolls on 17-inch bronze rims, with a black spoiler adding a finishing touch to the appearance. Inside, there are not many 2020 Toyota 86 accessories that set the model apart from the rest of the pack. The cabin greets with a two-tone color combination. There is a striking black and tan Alcantara upholstery on the car's seats and contrast stitching on the steering wheel. An embroidered 86 logo on the dash and floor mats rounds out the changes. All of the base interior and exterior features carry over to the special edition car, including LED forward lighting, power mirrors, chrome tail pipes, heated seating (sport seats for the driver and passenger), and cruise control. Aside from the base trim, the regular 86 offers the GT trim level, which adds push-button ignition, dual-zone climate control, and accelerometer for track use. Notable is the absence of modern driver assist systems.
The TRD Handling Package that can be optionally fitted to the 86 with a stick, as its name implies, includes a range of parts that sharpen up handling. What the car tuned by Toyota Racing Development has going for it is a set of Sachs shocks, 18-inch alloys and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rubber adding more grip, and Brembo brakes front and rear slowing it down. Like all other models across the range, this one features upgraded 7.0-inch infotainment that now has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Every 86 model is powered by the same 2.0-liter flat-4 that makes 200 horsepower when paired with an automatic transmission, while those who want to drive a stick can take advantage of 5 additional hp. This coupe is not about speedster-like performance, but acceleration is rather lively thanks to optimized gear ratios. Nor it is a gas guzzler, returning an outstanding 30 mpg. Its driving thrills come from super handling and agility, with a low center of gravity allowing it to hug the road.
