For the 2020 model year, Volvo has relaunched its Polestar brand as an electric vehicle manufacturer only. So, apart from the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1 released by the brand last year, all further Polestars will be fully electric. The vehicle that sets the start of the new era for the automaker is the Polestar 2, a five-door fastback. It shares the Compact Modular Architecture with the 40-Series cars and crossovers and borrows a great number of styling cues from the Volvo 40.2 concept car introduced to the public in May 2016. While there are many body parts and 2020 Polestar 2 accessories inside and out similar to those found in the concept car, the newcomer still sets its own unique design that is “more around the individual.”
The 2020 model has a fastback body shape, which means a reduced drag coefficient for significantly enhanced aerodynamic performance. Up front, it catches the eye with slim LED headlights. At the rear, the taillights stretch the entire width of the car giving it an attractive futuristic look. The panoramic roof is made from quality laminated glass that can remain intact even when it is shattered or broken. Six body paint colors and three wheel designs are available for buyers to choose from in the launch version. All 2020 Polestar 2 accessories and parts of the exterior are thoughtfully designed to provide not only distinctive looks, but also ultimate practicality. Thus, the newbie boasts frameless side mirrors that maximize the field of vision to the driver. Compared to conventional, three-box sedans, it sits a little bit higher, which makes it look crossover-like. Increasing the ride height allowed the engineers to integrate the 78-kWh battery pack with 27 modules into the floor, thus keeping the chassis rigid as well as hushing the compartment from road noise.
The powertrain includes two electric motors that provide a combined output of about 408 HP and allow the EV to sprint to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. This all-electric powertrain is also available with the Performance Package that includes adjustable Öhlins dampers and Brembo brakes. Forged wheels and distinctive yellow seatbelts further differentiate it from other models. Inside, the Polestar features numerous black ash and reconstructed wood interior accessories and 2020 Polestar 2 parts with a textile surface. For those looking for more luxury, Nappa leather is offered as an option. The crux of the interior is an infotainment system with an 11-inch screen. That system is the first in the world to be powered by Android. Moreover, it features natural voice control as well as a number of embedded Google services like Google Maps and Google Assistant. The launch model comes with both the Pilot and Plus packs, which offer plenty of electronic driver aids including everything from adaptive cruise control all the way up to semi-autonomous driving capability.
