Once you’ve thought that there couldn’t be a more powerful and dramatic race car than the 2018 McLaren 650S GT3, here comes the 2019 McLaren 720S. Remaining true to their motorsport passion, the designers at McLaren decided that the time for a new breathtaking sport car has come. The 720S GT3 is the successor of the 650S GT3, a race car that scored spectacular wins in all significant motorsports series, including the GT championship, Asian Le Mans Series, The Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, Pirelli World Challenge, Blancpain Endurance Cup, etc. The new 2019 McLaren 720S will be produced in a completely new dedicated facility in Woking, England.
The McLaren Super Series was first presented in 2014 and included a collection of sensational sports cars. Along with the base 650S model, McLaren also introduced the race-spec 650S GT3 and high-performance 675LT. Extremely fast, lightweight, and boasting the latest technologies and features, the Super Series has indisputably become McLaren’s most popular and successful automobile. Still, as we can see, the British car manufacturer has made a decision to replace it in only three years after the beginning of production. Its successor, the 2019 McLaren 720S, was presented at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, where the car maker also announced a race-spec GT3 model to be introduced soon as well.
The debut of the new 2019 McLaren 720S is scheduled to take place in the 2019 season of the Blancpain Endurance Series. Same as all GT3 sport cars, the 720S features a carbon monocoque body and the same mid-mounted twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine delivering torque to the rear wheels. Still, many 2019 McLaren 720S parts and accessories have been changed or tweaked. Visually, the most noticeable changes are observed on the 720S rear end, as well as front bumper and the trunk. The supercar has lost the predecessor’s side air intakes to look sleeker and more ‘athletic’. The air is now transported to the radiators and engine by means of a well-disguised channel, located next to the car’s rear windows. Also, the 720S gets a 6-speed sequential transmission, lots of Venturi tunnels in the diffuser, high-exiting exhaust system, widened quarter panels, and a massive rear wing.
The McLaren 720S Track Theme and Pacific Theme are new additions to the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) portfolio. As a thoroughbred race car, the 720S Track Theme features a titanium harness bar and has all of the carbon fiber parts and accessories satin finished instead of painted to save every ounce of weight. An Anniversary White body shade is contrasted by black and bright orange accents. The seats are upholstered in black Alcantara with orange stitching. The body of the McLaren 720S Pacific Theme, with its flowing lines and three shades of blue, calls the beauty of ocean waves to mind. Silver-finished wheels with gray calipers are in absolute harmony with the exterior paint tones. The blue theme continues in the interior, accenting the seats and steering wheel.
The Track Pack Specification available for the 570S makes its way to the 720S for 2019. Fitted with this package that adds a bunch of lightweight components, the already skinny two-door shreds 53 pounds off its weight. The “regular” 570S is already packed with carbon fiber parts, but the Track Pack gets an active rear wing, gearshift paddles, and racing seats made using this material. Lightweight forged alloy wheels and a titanium bar in the cockpit aid in reducing the total mass as well. And when it's time for the car to show what it's worth on the circuit, the driver can benefit from the on-board track telemetry that uses three cameras and data-logging software.
Arguably, the most impressive car in the lineup is the 2019 McLaren 720S Spider droptop. It came to supersede the 650S Spider and take on the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars. While being almost identical to its coupe sibling inside and out and featuring the same powertrain, the convertible weighs 108 lb more. Although, with its 2,937 lb of dry weight, the 720S Spider remains the lightest car in its segment. It also has the fastest-operating top that opens and closes in just 11 seconds. With the roof up, the car can hit 212 mph, while stowing it knocks 10 mph off the top speed.
When it comes to the interior 2019 McLaren 720S accessories and parts, some changes can also be seen. The new supercar has a well-trimmed cabin, which is extremely functional and comfortable. Now it’s much easier to get in and out of the sports car thanks to the 720S’s wider-opening doors and lower sills.
