The Dodge Neon debuted in 1995 as an affordable, fun-to-drive compact car in coupe and sedan versions. With its suspension and steering finely tuned for cornering and a four-cylinder engine making big power for an economy car, it was a popular choice for youngsters in search of a cheaper domestic alternative to imported sport compacts. The redesign that came with the second generation in 2000 toned this car down performance-wise, and the Dodge Neon started losing sales. The sporty 230-hp Neon SRT-4 that came in 2003 couldn't save the day. The 2005 model year was the last one for this cute compact on the U.S. market. Although, the SRT-4 has developed a loyal following in Mexico. Trying to regain its share of the market based on that fan following, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles revived the nameplate specifically for the Mexican market for 2017. This time, it is an entirely different car based on the Fiat Tipo.
The third-generation Dodge Neon is wrapped in new sheetmetal and gained more mature exterior styling. The 2019 Neon features a massive, rounded front fascia. A crosshair grille, aggressive lines, and swept-back headlights hint at its kinship with the Dodge Charger. The interior, however, is almost entirely Fiat-like, with only the steering wheel control layout resembling that of Dodge vehicles. The 2019 Dodge Neon has enough interior room to seat five in comfort, while the optional split folding rear seating allows for ample cargo space for a sedan. There are nine additional storage compartments in convenient locations throughout the cabin. Three trim levels are offered for the Neon – SE, SXT, and SXT Plus. The base SE has a 3.5-inch LCD screen for the Uconnect infotainment, while stepping up to higher trims brings a 7-inch touchscreen with the available navigation and Bluetooth. In the markets where it is offered, the Neon is the only car in its class to have electric power steering featuring standard variable assist with the level of power assistance selected by the driver. It is also claimed to have the widest range of driver aids, including electronic roll mitigation and stability control, emergency braking, and even trailer sway control.
The standard engine powering the Dodge Neon is a 1.4-liter 95-hp four-cylinder. The optional one, a 1.6-liter E.TorQ four, makes 110 hp and 112 lb.-ft. of torque managed by a 6-speed automatic.
