Just like other Toyota trucks, the Tundra was designed to take on popular pickups built on the American soil. The introduction of the Toyota Tundra in 1999 was the first foray of a foreign manufacturer into the U.S. full-size pickup truck market segment. And, as it often happens, the very first attempt wasn’t very successful. However, Toyota had no intentions to give up and took another shot with the launch of the second generation of the Tundra in 2006, a much more capable machine that is a worthy competitor to long-established trucks from the Big Three.
By 2012, this truck has established itself and formed its own customer base, even though it was not as wide as that of Ford, Chevy, and Ram trucks. For the 2012 model year, the aging Tundra came with a handful of changes to the exterior and packages. The new truck has added the Chrome Package to the Double Cab and CrewMax models. While adorning the body with shiny chrome accessories and parts that include door handles, exhaust tips, side mirrors, and 18-inch wheels, the Tundra clearly imitates the style of its American competitors in an attempt to entice some of their clients. The Double Cab and CrewMax also got some minor changes to already existing packages: the Convenience Package, Convenience Package with Bucket Seats, SR5 Package, and Upgrade Package.
Offering nothing new in terms of the engine, transmission, or anything else taking an impact on performance, the upgraded Tundra gains an optional Cold Area Package and makes heated side mirrors and daytime running lights standard for all models. With the towing package available now as a standalone option, the backup camera becomes one of the new features of the upscale Limited model. Inside the cabin, the 2012 Tundra gets black finish for the instrument panel and a couple of other minor tweaks.
Although pretty much any Toyota truck is a reliable vehicle with a reasonable cost of ownership and excellent resale value, your Tundra still requires regular maintenance, some replacements and, presumably, accessories.
