All Esteem models used a single overhead cam engine, a five-speed manual transmission as standard, while a four-speed automatic was optional. In 1999, the Esteem received a 1.8 L I4 engine instead of the old 1.6 L unit. Also, the front end became rounded, the grille was upgraded, the new headlights were added.
