One of the most distinctive compact SUVs on the road, the Nissan Xterra made its debut during the 2000 model year. At its introduction, the base XE was outfitted with a 2.4L inline four-cylinder engine good for 143 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission. A stronger 3.3L V6 that produced 170 horsepower was also available, which could be geared to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. These versions of the XE also offered step rails and a roof rack. The top-level trim was the SE, which showcased a flip-up sunroof and special badging, as well as several different options. In 2002, the Xterra was refreshed with a boost to the V6 engine, upping the horsepower to 180 before a supercharged 210 hp option became available as well. The front end was also restyled, while the interior received new trim and an improved stereo system.

Nissan premiered the second generation of the Xterra in 2005. The model received a big engine upgrade, showing off a 4.0L V6 that delivers up to 265 horsepower directed through a five-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. It is built off of the Nissan-F platform along with the Titan and Frontier. The model comes in four trim levels for the second generation: X, S, SE, and Off-Road. The X, S, and SE are all available in both rear and four-wheel drive. However, the Off-Road can only be had in four-wheel drive. Base X models come with such Xterra parts and features as air conditioning, a roof rack, 60/40 rear-folding seats, and cargo tie-downs, while the S displays step rails, alloy wheels, and a multi-adjustable driver's seat. For the SE, drivers received a more luxurious package with audio controls located on the steering wheel, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, MPS capability, and a foldable front passenger seat. The Nissan Xterra Off-Road comes standard with 16” off-roading tires, alloy wheels, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, skid plates, running boards, traction control, and other amenities and Nissan Xterra parts.

In 2009, the Nissan Xterra parts received several changes. Leather upholstery was added to the SE, and new colors were added to the lineup as choices. The Off-Road Xterra was adorned with roof-mounted lights. As for the overall success of the model, the Nissan Xterra has received a collection of honors since it first rolled off the line. In 2000, it was named Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year as well as the North American Truck of the Year. 2006 was a particularly big year for the Xterra both in sales as well as recognition. It was nominated as the North American Truck of the Year, named Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year once again, and also dubbed Car and Driver magazine's Rock Hopper SUV award winner. 4Wheeler Magazine most recently recognized the model as its SUV of the Year (2009).

One of the more "buzzworthy" vehicles in recent years is the Nissan Xterra, and this fashionably designed crossover does it all. Put together for the kind of drivers who enjoy some dirt and rocks under their feet, the Xterra covers all terrains with precision and conviction, allowing the dust to settle right before anyone notices just how stylish this machine really is. There is enough pump from the V6 to give an adrenaline rush when needed, and the interior parts are comfortable and refined. Nissan knew they had a winner when they came up with the Xterra but no one saw this coming. Truly a one of a kind SUV that knows how to dress for the party, especially when exclusive accessories come into play.
