The first generation of the Fiat Panda, announced by Italian automaker Fiat in 1980, was a subcompact car that gained popularity in Europe in the first year of its production and received the second place in the European Car of the Year voting. The Fiat Panda parts were facelifted several times in 1986 and 1991, and the model remained in production until 2003, when the second generation Fiat Panda appeared. The first Pandas were powered by either an air-cooled 0.65L two cylinder or by water-cooled 0.9L four cylinder engine.

The New Panda (Nuovo Panda in Italian), originally named 'Gingo,' was introduced in 2003 after 23 years of successful production of the old Panda. The Fiat Panda accessories and body styling were borrowed from the mini MPVs and mini SUVs. This model boasts optional split rear seats, and since 2005 it is equipped with EBD, ABS and minimum two front airbags. A smaller 3-door Fiat 500 descended from the Panda in 2007.
