The legendary Volkswagen Beetle received some significant improvements for the 2018 model year. The vehicle now employs a new base engine that delivers higher torque and horsepower. Classic, SEL, and R-Line grades were discontinued, and three new optional packages were introduced as well as a new version named the Coast. Apart from the latter, the lineup includes S, SE, and Dune trims now. All variants of the 2018 Beetle come with a 2.0 L turbo I4 under the hood that generates 174 hp and 184 lb.-ft. Thanks to a modified combustion chamber and piston crown, the power unit has a higher compression ratio of 11.7:1. The new engine kept some key features of the former power unit, including twin balance shafts and chain-driven double overhead camshafts, though comes with a range of improvements such as a new management system and decreased friction. The power unit returns up to 34 mpg.
The new Coast variant of the Beetle, based on the S version, offers a number of distinctive features. It comes with a unique exterior color, cloth seating, scuff plates, Monster Mats, special dashboard trim resembling a surfboard, and Blind Spot Monitor. The Lighting Package is optionally offered for the model, it includes xenon headlights, LED taillights and DRLs, and LED license plate lights. The base S grade can be fitted with a Style & Comfort Package that includes 17” aluminum-alloy wheels, body-colored door handles, mirrors and side sills, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 6.3” touchscreen, push-button start, satellite radio, voice controls, and leatherette seats with heating and lumbar adjustment. A Premium Package is offered for the SE grade. It contains 18” aluminum-alloy wheels, LED DRLs and taillights, Bi-Xenon headlights, fog lights, navigation, an audio system by Fender, and ParkPilot system.
The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle retained its iconic image known for decades, though now it has a more athletic stance. The model’s roof profile runs much lower than in previous versions, making the vehicle look bolder. Inside, the Beetle is roomy, offering 85 cu. ft. of total interior space that includes 41.3” of front legroom and 37.1” of rear headroom. Cargo space is also notable – 15.4 cu. ft. with the rear seats up and 29.9 cu. ft. when they’re folded.
