As a part of the Volvo 900 series, the Volvo S90 belongs to the class of mid-size luxury automobiles. It was offered with a choice of two body configurations, four-door sedan and five-door station wagon, both able to seat five passengers. The front-engined S90 was one of the last two rear-wheel drive Volvo models (the V90 was the second one). The Volvo S90 was released in 1997 as a substitute for the Volvo 960. This car offered two engine options: a 2.5L I6 power unit producing either 170 or 179 hp, and a 2.9L I6 rated at either 180 or 204 hp. As the S90 production was discontinued in 1998, only 26,269 cars were built. Also, Volvo produced a few elongated limousines and armored sedans based on the S90.
