Volvo launched the 960 model in 1990. This luxury car was a substitution for the older 760. For the U.S. market, the first Volvo 960 was manufactured in 1991 for the next model year. For most markets, the model was powered by a new aluminum 24-valve DOHC I6 engine developing 201 hp. In 1994, the Volvo 960 underwent a facelift, which included body-colored panels and grille's changes. All the 960s in the U.S. were outfitted with an electronically controlled AW-series automatic gearbox by Aisin. In 1996, Volvo decided to rename the 960 into the S90 (sedan) and V90 (wagon) due to the new naming scheme.
