The Touareg has a choice of gasoline and diesel engines among which were a humming Volkswagen 6.0L W12 gasoline power unit and a 5.0L turbocharged TDI V10 diesel engine. The latter was available in the U.S. only in 2004 because of the emissions regulations. The transmission was six-speed automatic, and a manual one was optional for diesel engines. In 2011, an eight-speed automatic transmission took over. The second generation offered various model versions, like the Touareg Hybrid, the two-colored Touareg Exclusive, the Race Touareg 3, the Race Touareg 3 Qatar, the Touareg X.
