The Touareg world debut took place at the Paris Motor Show in September 2002. The model’s name dates back to the Middle Ages, when nomadic tribes of "Knights of the Desert" living in the Sahara were called Touaregs. Today the Touareg is the first executive class sport utility vehicle. It epitomizes a fundamentally new concept of the Volkswagen, combining the qualities of a great SUV with the comfort of a sedan and the dynamics of a sports car. High off-road capability is provided by a new electronic all-wheel drive. In normal mode, the system distributes the power of the engine between the front and rear axle. If one wheel slips, however, this wheel is braked, and the power of the engine is transmitted to the other wheels. When accelerating, the system throws more power to the rear wheels, providing the most efficient acceleration.
