In North America, the first generation (B1) of the Volkswagen Passat was known as the Volkswagen Dasher. The Dasher was engineered on the Audi platform, had front-wheel drive and, for the first time in the history of Volkswagen, water-cooled engine. The car’s design was worked out by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was named Car Designer of the 20th Century. Originally, there were presented 4 body versions of the car: two- or four-door sedan and three- or five-door hatchback. At the time, the Dasher was an advanced and well-equipped car. In 1974 it was called Car of the Year by the Australian magazine Wheels. In 1977, when more than million units have been sold, the model undergone a restyling, which slightly changed its appearance and made it look more up-to-date. In 1978 the diesel version was introduced.
