The original Volkswagen Passat, which was essentially the Audi 80, was known in North America as the Dasher. In fact, the successive generations of the Passat are known as B1 and B2. The Volkswagen Dasher was offered as a three- and five-door hatchback and station wagon introduced by the German manufacturer since 1974 till 1981 for the North American market. The Dasher was powered by the carbureted 1.5-liter inline-four engine developing 75 hp (or 70 hp in 1975). The 1976 model was powered) by a Bosch fuel-injected 1.6-liter engine with 78 hp.
After Volkswagen Group's acquisition of Audi in 1964, Volkswagen engineers started using new engineering expertise to create modern front-wheel drive vehicles with a water-cooled engine. The Volkswagen Dasher was offered with either a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. The 1978 Volkswagen Dasher received a facelift that was primarily related to the front end, rear end, the exhaust system and the instrument panel. Through the use of big bumpers, the revised car seemed more modern. The 1.5-liter diesel engine was introduced in 1979. It took the Dasher 19.4 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph, which is 6.2 seconds slower than the petrol engine. Later, all petrol engines were dropped in preparation for the next generation.
The Volkswagen Dasher was partially developed from the Audi 80 with its perfect combination of styling and engineering excellence. The young, successful Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was the first to revise the original Audi design so the Dasher got its independent appearance and was immediately well received by the audience. In addition to careful workmanship, there are many details that make the Volkswagen Dasher comfortable and pleasant to drive. During the production period, the Dasher incorporated numerous technical innovations.
Despite its old age, the Dasher still cruises the streets.
