Trailer Breakaway Kits

Probably the scariest thing that can happen when towing is having the trailer become disconnected from the tow vehicle. A loose trailer weighing hundreds to thousands of pounds rolling along uncontrolled can cause catastrophic damage. Of course, safety chains should always be used but if they should fail a breakaway kit will activate the trailer’s electric brakes if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle, slowing and bringing the trailer to a safe stop, and helping to prevent injury and property loss.

We offer a large selection of breakaway kits and parts for trailers with up to 3 axles, to help make towing safe. A basic kit includes a 12V battery in a protective battery box and a breakaway switch. The battery and switch are wired into the trailer brake system, the battery box mounted on the trailer frame, and the switch mounted near the trailer coupler. If the trailer separates from the vehicle, a cable connected to the vehicle will pull a pin from the switch, signaling the 12V battery to activate the electric trailer brakes.

Beyond the basics we have kits that have added security and time saving features. Most battery boxes are made of tough, weather resistant plastic, and we have kits with lockable cases to prevent theft of your battery. The breakaway system is only as good as the battery, so with a basic kit you’ll have to test the battery and periodically recharge it to make sure it has the power to activate the brakes if needed. However, we also offer kits that make it easy to both check the battery and keep it in a full state of charge.

Our premium kits include a built-in battery charger that charges the battery anytime the trailer is connected to the tow vehicle. Most breakaway kits with built-in chargers also have a push-to-test feature that, with just the push of a button, will indicate the health of your battery. LED lights show that the battery is fully charged, charging, or needs recharging. Finally, mounting a breakaway kit makes common sense, for safety and peace of mind. They’re inexpensive and easy to install, but having one is also a legal requirement in many states. We offer kits that meet all DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements.

In addition to complete Breakaway Kits, we also offer a full line of replacement parts including batteries, battery boxes, switches, cables and pins. Trailers may be stored and operated in harsh environments where they are subject to weathering and wear, and that can include parts of the Breakaway system. Safety is too important to be left to chance, so inspect your Breakaway system regularly to make sure it is in working order and replace parts as necessary. We also offer parts to upgrade your system. For example, instead of having to wrap the breakaway cable around the trailer frame or risk fraying from dragging on the ground, we offer coiled cable assemblies with a protective coating and a carabiner clip for easy vehicle attachment.
