Originally introduced as the Suzuki Cultus Crescent in Japan, the model was renamed the Esteem for the North American market. Though it was the first attempt of the brand to enter the compact car market segment, it became rather successful. The Esteem was originally offered as a 3-door hatchback and 4-door sedan powered by an I4 engine, either a 1.3L or 1.5L, with power output rated at 85 hp and 97 hp respectively. Both North American and Asian versions were available with 4-wheel drive and in a 5-door station wagon body type since 1996. The Esteem was superseded by the Aerio in 2001.
