Your Subaru Legacy is made up of thousands of parts, and every single one of them, including fenders, is there for a reason. Save for aesthetics, the main function of fenders is to improve the aerodynamic quality of the vehicle and trap the debris thrown by rotating tires. Of course, the fenders in your car are constructed for the given width and certain track of the wheels. Fender flares are what you use if you end up with any of these two modified.
