Electronic fuel injection systems operate at very high fuel pressures. This is why the electric fuel pump must be able to consistently supply fuel at pressure as high as 75 psi or more providing the engine with enough fuel at the required pressure for proper performance. The typical pump has an impeller attached to the end of the motor shaft that draws in fuel from one end and pushes it out at the other end of the pump. An average fuel pump fails between 7 and 10 years.
