The heater core is located in a case under the dash and connected into the engine cooling system. Consisting of tubes and fins, this component carries the coolant and transfers heat to the passenger cabin. As the coolant circulates through the core, the blower motor blows air through the core, warming the interior. The most common causes for heater core replacement are leakage and clogging. If you have noticed that your heater performance is less than satisfactory your heater core may be plugged with scale and debris from the cooling system, indicated by a coolant return hose that is significantly cooler than the inlet hose. If you have wet carpet and slimy film on the windows accompanied by the somewhat sweet smell of anti-freeze, the heater core is leaking coolant.
