The Saturn Ion was designed as a compact car offered in two options of a four-door body configuration: either sedan or quad-coupe. The production run of the Ion started in 2002 (for the 2003 model year) after its appearance at the New York International Auto Show. The Ion was equipped with front-wheel drive and several versions of gasoline engines: 2.0L LSJ, 2.2L L61 and 2.4L LE5. It was also possible to choose between manual and automatic transmissions. Thus, automatic gearbox options included four- and five-speed ones, while the manual transmission was offered in a single version – a five-speed gearbox. In March 2007, the Ion was replaced with the Saturn Astra.
