The debut of the Saturn Astra took place at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. It was created with the intention to replace the Saturn Ion in the company's lineup. The model was designed as a hatchback offered in a three-door or a five-door body style. The engine was available in a single option – a 1.8L U18XER gasoline motor which featured the variable valve technology and was able to produce 138 horsepower. Customers could choose either a four-speed automatic gearbox or a five-speed manual one. Among other useful features, there were cruise control, air conditioning system, power steering locks, windows, and mirrors, ABS brakes, airbags and so on. Production of the model was discontinued in 2009.
