The production of the earliest generation of the Saab 9-5 began in 1997. The model was offered in either a four-door sedan or a five-door station wagon body style. Both gasoline (2.0L B205 I4, 2.3L B235 I4 and 3.0L B308 V6) and diesel (1.9L turbodiesel I4, 2.2L turbodiesel D223 I4 and 3.0L Isuzu 6DE1 V6) engines were available. The range of transmissions was presented with a four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic / manual options. The second generation appeared on the market in 2010 – only four-door sedan remained in the family. The variety of engines went through certain changes: there were three turbocharged gasoline (1.6L I4, 2.0L I4 and 2.8L V6) variants offered only. A six-speed gearbox (automatic or manual) was the only one variant. The manufacture of the model was ceased in 2012.
