Racing Oil Systems & Components

In general, automotive oil systems can be divided into two major groups: wet and dry sump. Both of them can be used in different kinds of racing, and each one has its own pros and cons. The wet sump is used in most passenger cars and is applicable for lower-lever racing machines. It's inexpensive, and if the performance of the wet-sump setup is fully enough to provide good lubrication, it ticks all the boxes. Using an oil pan as a sump to store motor oil, the system features a relatively simple pump to create oil pressure. However, if you're into racing, you may need a special, racing oil pan having a more complex construction, which allows you to store more oil without increasing the pan's depth and helps to prevent oil starvation.

The dry-sump system is more advanced. Using an external oil reservoir, a special pump creates sufficient pressure of oil in all working modes, regardless of centrifugal forces acting when you're cornering, G-force appearing during rapid acceleration or sharp braking, and other situations common for racing and motorsport. Besides better lubrication in harsh conditions, such a system enables you to install oil coolers to keep oil temperature within an optimal range. Apart from that, the dry-sump setup provides some power gain. It becomes possible thanks to two factors. First, the quantity of oil in the pan is reduced, and it doesn't grab power while clinging to the rotating parts. Second, the external pump creates a vacuum in the pan, which enhances the seal provided by the piston rings.

Another benefit of the dry sump setup is a shallower oil pan, which either provides a larger ground clearance or gives an opportunity to lower the engine and, correspondingly, the mass center. In fact, certain expenses needed for the installation seem to be the main disadvantage of this system.
